Texas law allows school districts to teach The Bible and Its Influence on Western Civilization as an elective. Many North Texas area school districts currently offer this course.

Texas law requires schools to teach "religious literature" such as the Bible.
As of the start of the 2009/2010 school year Texas state law allows Texas school districts to offer enrichment curriculum that includes “religious literature, including the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and New Testament and its impact on history and literature. This Law was approved by a collective vote of 167-3, by the Texas House and Senate, in 2007 (HB 1287).
